This massacre was so viscious and irrational, no excuse exists. Apologies given, will not be received. Surviving victims and family members will be inconsolable. Tragically, the Taliban were handed another propaganda victory, and we all know they will take full advantage. It is tragic all round.
In spite of the fact that no excuse exists, a glimmer of a medical explanation has been suggested. It is early days yet, but traumatic brain injury is not very well understood. How resiliant can the brain be - especially when dealing with the stress of war? This stuff is that of new medical frontiers. I must admit, when the story first appeared, it sounded so bizzarely irrational, I immediately thought 'psychological breakdown'.
I suppose most people thought the same. What a sad situation. Of course, even if this explanation bears out, it won't change the reality of the situation - not on the ground in Afghanistan anyway.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved.
