Regarding the debate:
President Obama is a fighter. As First Lady said at the DNC, "Barack loves me, he loves our children and we love him because he will never give up on us." Barack loves his family and by extension loves us. He will not give up on us. He said it himself in his closing argument, "If elected, I'll not stop fighting. I won't give up." After all his slogan is "Forward". No retreat. No surrender.
This is not what we want in a president. A dictator, yes. A king absolutely. A good movie, but not a good president. The function of our president is to work with the other party. We have checks and balances. We have a 2 party system. To play politics. If not, everything the democrat wants is rejected by the republicans and visa versa. There is a stale mate. Nothing is accomplished. This typifies the President's second half of his first term. A stale mate. Congress rejected Obama's every idea not because he is black, but because he is blue. A democrat.
Reagan's every whim was rejected by congress not because of his skin color, but because he was a republican. But Uncle Ronnie was able to schmooze the other party, so much so many were called "Reagan Democrats". Clinton's every whim was rejected by congress not because of his skin color but because he was a democrat. Yet Slick Willie was able to weasel his way with the other party so much so some were called "Clinton Republicans."
President Obama is not our uncle or a slick lawyer. He is an ideologue. And a poor president.
Some may believe the president should be an ideologue, standing by principles no matter what the cost. Ideology is good for movies, pundits and cartoonists to define principles in theory. In the practice of governing it's only used a goal, not to detail how to actually get there.
President Obama will not only set goals, but detail how to get there. Romney sets goals but lets the team decide themselves how to get there. This is why Romney's plans are vague and why Obama's are specific. Obama said this himself during the debate this evening.
This is telling.
Remember Romney faced an uphill battle to win the GOP nomination. The GOP machine picked Romney from the start. He was the best choice. Others wanted a nominee who was more conservative. Votes for Bachman, Perry, Cain and Santorum were not for them as much as it was in referendum against Romney. He was not conservative enough. Ron Paul took the most limiting government stance, more libertarian than republican. Although the most ideologue, he was never taken seriously, for if anyone asked, "what if he won?" the answer was that he'd never get anything done. Paul could say "2+2=4" and congress would say "no". Without politics, his presidency would be a failed stale mate, much like the 2nd half of Obama's. Although Obama's grid lock is blamed on his skin not ideology.
What if Obama wins? Would congress cave to his very specific details of moving forward? Or would they dig deeper to resist? Like Bush, Obama would stretch executive power to it's limit to work around our government's check and balance 2 party system. Like Bush, Obama will not quit or surrender. And like Bush, you're either with him or with the bad guys. There are no "Obama Republicans". At least he loves us and his life story would make a good movie.
What if Romney wins? Could Romney change his mind on details if it meets his ideological goal? Even if it means embracing big government solutions like Romneycare? If he was good at politics to survive a blue state like Massachusetts could do so to survive democrats in congress? Could he create "Romney Democrats"?
The job of the president is to play politics. Romney may or may not love us. His life may make a terrible movie. He is not the most ideal conservative, but he is the best choice for the job as president.
